Lu Mountain 庐山

It is one of the spiritual centers of Chinese civilization, located in Jiangxi Province, about 100 kilometers from the capital Nanchang and 20 kilometers south of Jiujiang City. Mount Lu shows an unique combination of scenery, religions, education and culture: a blending of Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, Islam and Christianity, together with a beautiful natural landscape made of cliffs, sea of clouds, waterfalls, grottoes, rocks, cliff inscriptions and steles. The national park covers an area of 500 square kilometers and has more than 90 mountain peaks. The main peak, Big Hanyang Peak (Dahanyang 大汉阳峰), is at 1474m asl. The mountain is abundant in biological resources with 3000 kinds of plants, 2000 kinds of insects, over 170 kinds of birds as well as 37 kinds of animals. Lu Mountain was also an educational base and religious center of ancient China: the Bailudong Academy was founded here in 1940, the country's oldest academy and one of China's four most prestigious academies. More than 1500 eminent writers, poets, artists and calligraphers visited the Lushan for inspiration, such as Li Bai, Bai Juyi, Su Shi, Kang Youwei, Guo Moruo, etc. writing poems and essays, over 900 cliff inscriptions and more than 300 tablets with poems and couplets are testimonies.There are 12 main scenic areas.

Ku Ling Town (Ku Ling Zhen 牯岭镇)
located in the center of Mount Lu, at about 1200 meters above sea level. The original name of Gu Ling was Guniu Ling, as it looks like a bull, and the city's symbol is a large statue of a stone bull, two meters high and four meters wide with the character 'Gu Ling' at its base, in the Center Park, built in 1954. Hotels, shops, restaurants, souvenir kiosks, coffee and tea shops are located in GuLing.

Three Step Waterfall (San die quan三叠泉)
Also called Three Tiled Springs, it is located at the foot of the Wulao Peaks and is one of the most famous sight on Mount Lu. With a drop of 155 meters, the waterfall fall over three natural terraces formed by glaciers to the pool below (from the bus stop need to walk 10min to the cable way station, 1492m long, altitude from 839 to 992m, 10min run, 80cny round way, this takes you to the first layer, then need to hike down for about 1600 steps to the bottom to see the waterfall - it takes 1.5h from the cable way exit to walk down to the waterfall and back)

in the southeast of Lushan Scenic Area, with an altitude of about 1436, the peak is cut across by a mountain pass and is split into five separate peaks. Seen from the base of the mountain, the five peaks look like five old men sitting on the ground. This is the steepest and the most beautiful peaks in Lushan area. The five peaks have a different shape when seen from different points of view: from an angle you can see fishermen fishing, while from others, they look like old monks sitting cross-legged. Between them the second peak has oddly-shaped rocks, while the third peak is the most dangerous and the fourth peak is the most beautiful, the fifth is open and relatively expansive. On the top you can overlook Poyang Lake and countryside view nearby (1.5h visit).

Hanpo Pass
called Han Po Lin Knife Edge Ridge is shaped like a knife and was formed by ice erosion. The ridge runs along the mountain in a westerly direction for 1250m, at 1100 meters above sea level. In the middle of the ridge, on the East, is Hanpo Pavilion while at the highest point is Wangpo Pavilion from which can admire Poyang Lake. 25min visit, free entrance

Located in front of Lulin Lake, covers an area of 20000 square meters. It is said to be the former residence of Chairman Mao Zedong in Lushan. It shows collections of porcelain wares, calligraphy, and Mao Zedong photography during his stay in Lushan, some furniture from the residence time, there is section for celebrities, 21 famous visitors of Lushan, another area shows old photos of the mountain, and Mt. Lushan evolution of geological history. 30 min visit, free entrance

Big Heavenly Pond (大天池)
also called DaTianChi and Grand Heavenly Pool, is located at the top of Tian Chi Mountain in the northwest of LuShan Mountain. It was a natural well of the Tianchi Temple in the middle of the pool, with a stone bridge diving the pool in two parts. The pool is 10 meters long and 3 wide, this story tell that it was built by Bodhisattva Manjusri who “tabbed two of his fingers into the rock and the two holes were formed with water coming from under the rock”. They says the pool never dries all through the year. Other special places of this scenic area are the platform of Heaven’s Heart Zhao Jiang cliff stone carvings, Dragon Head Cliff. 1 hour visit, free entrance

It is an area with six old villas and an American Church in an area of 4800 square meters. In each of these villas is possible to admire the architectural style, the furniture and the history of who lived there, between them famous people like Edward S. Little and Pearl S. Buck. The Villa 282 was the residence for the missionary of PE church, 251 sqm, American style. Villa 280, built in 1919 in stone structure, was the dining hall for the leaders of the central authorities of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party in 1957. Villa 310 was the residence of Nobel Prize Pearl Sydenstricker, built in 1897 in European style, 140 sqm. Villa 307 was the residence for officers of Kuomintang. Villa 281 hold the Lushan Villas History Exhibition with an introduction about the history of Lushan development. 1 hour visit, 35 cny fee entrance

being simple and natural in style is quite a sight on Lushan Mountain. There are individual buildings with unique style and structure, including styles of Rome- and Gothic- churches, Japanese building and Islamic Mosque. Built in shady places, the villa is well integrated with the natural scenery with casual style. Buildings here are mostly one or two-storeyed, though in clusters, are less densely located and decorated with trees all around, which is a pleasing picture to the eye. 40min visit free

The Grotto of Taoist Immortal also called Immortal’s Cave and Buddha Hand Cliff because it looks like a hand of Buddha, it is a natural cave in a precipice, 7 meters high and 14 deep with a statue of Lu Dongbin. It is a man-made lake built in 1961 and named after a stone inscription of four Chinese characters which means “the sound of the stream into the lake is like a lute playing” the shape of the lake is also like a lute. A zig zag bridge connect to an oval shaped island in the middle of the lake.
The Flower Path Garden is famous because it is the place where the Tang Dynasty poet Bai Juyi wrote his great poem Ode to the Peach Flowers when he was wandering around here in a late spring and near Dalin Temple he was surprised to find the peach flowers were still in blossom, so he wrote the poem. 2 hours visit
